Case study Local SEO · 2024
Ranking a driving school number one in two cities.
How Olu K Driving School reached the top of Google in Surulere, Lagos and Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, using local SEO on a small-business budget.
01 The brief
A small business with a real problem.
Olu K Driving School is a family-owned driving school operating in two Nigerian cities: Surulere in Lagos and Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State. The business had strong word-of-mouth reputation in both cities and zero online presence. When potential customers searched Google for "driving school in Surulere" or "driving lessons Ijebu-Ode", the school did not appear.
The competition ranged from national driving schools with large SEO budgets to directory sites that had captured the top spots through link-buying. The brief was direct: rank on page one for the primary local terms in both cities, within one quarter, on a small-business budget.
02 The approach
Three moves, in order.
Google Business Profile, done properly
Two separate profiles, one per location, each with complete NAP details, hours, service categories, photographs of the actual school and vehicles, and consistent naming across both. This alone takes most local businesses further than they expect.
Two dedicated city landing pages
One for Surulere, one for Ijebu-Ode. Each with locally specific content covering the school's offering in that city, testimonials from students in that catchment, and answers to the questions local searchers were actually asking. No thin content, no templated copy with the city name swapped.
Reviews, citations and quiet link earning
A systematic process for asking satisfied students to leave Google reviews, consistent citations across the Nigerian business directories that matter, and a small number of legitimate local links from community and educational sites. No paid links, no private networks, no shortcuts.
Number one on Google.
04 Reflection
Why this worked.
Local SEO for a small business is often treated as a smaller version of enterprise SEO. It is not. The mechanics are different, the competition is different, and the signals Google weights are different.
What worked here was doing three foundational things properly, in the right order, without shortcuts. Google Business Profile as the anchor, dedicated city pages as the content foundation, and legitimate reviews and citations as the trust signal.
The lesson generalises. Most local SEO problems are not solved by more sophisticated tactics but by doing the basics without cutting corners. It is the same playbook I now run for businesses across the West Midlands.
